Two years on from establishing the Red Basics project as an outlet for
his solo productions, We Play House founder Red D is ready to release
his first full-length outing under the alias. Fantasize Then Realise
is, like much of the material the Belgian has released as Red Basics,
inspired by electronic music from Detroit and Chicago, primarily the
formative techno and deep house sounds that emerged from the two
cities in the late 1980s. His take on this classic sound is naturally
immaculately observed and executed, with oodles of nostalgic drum
machine rhythms, spacey chords, ear-pleasing basslines, attractive
lead lines and gently psychedelic acid lines. Throw in a bunch of
impressive collaborations (Sam Soda, Lefto and Reggie Dokes all
feature) and you have an excellent album.
