Second-guessing what Alex 'Omar' Smith might do next has always been
tricky; after all, the celebrated Detroiter has always been keen on
following his creative instincts. The four tracks showcased on his
latest EP are naturally all expertly executed and hugely entertaining,
but also intriguingly different. Smith begins by cannily combining a
jaunty synth bassline with locked-in house drums, echoing melodic
motifs and subtle nods to synth-pop on 'Tongue Pecker', before
pitching up his house grooves to a stomping techno tempo on breathless
(but musically melodic) King Milo hook-up 'Pain'. Soul vocalist John
FM makes his presence felt on the heartfelt, frequently beat-free
ballad 'I Love Your Girlfriend', while Tayloe swings sweetly atop
mutant electro beats on the deep, spacey and ethereal 'Some Good
Loving'.
